A new opening in relations with the inhabitants of Świnoujście regarding the deep-water container terminal

In Świnoujście, with the participation of residents, councilors and the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority, as well as representatives of the investor of the deep-water container terminal, a meeting was held on July 9 this year. Extraordinary 5th session of the City Council dedicated to this project.

The Ports Authority presented a timeline of activities undertaken so far, the assumed technical parameters of the terminal and the expected benefits it will bring to the inhabitants of Świnoujście, the city and the state treasury.

Representatives of the consortium investor, which includes DEME Concessions, QTerminals, Meridiam Investment Fund and Industrial Development Agency, presented the scope of their activities and arguments in favor of locating the project in Świnoujście.

It is assumed that the deepwater container terminal in Świnoujście will be the most modern and environmentally friendly project in the Baltic Sea. It will be built in accordance with the idea of ​​a green terminal, which is to ensure the use of environmentally friendly technologies and materials. It will use automated and state-of-the-art equipment powered by electricity, which will minimize the terminal's impact on CO2 emissions. The investor plans to use intelligent building lighting with motion sensors and intelligent electricity management. In turn, a high degree of automation of terminal operations is intended to ensure optimization of transport planning processes in order to avoid queues and accumulation of cargo flows handled inside and outside the terminal.

Training, development of local employees and creation of new specialized jobs in the region are also planned. The expected direct employment is 250 qualified employees, which may increase to 500 at a later stage.

It is estimated that the state budget should receive approximately PLN 5 billion annually in the first stage of the terminal's operations in the form of customs and tax liabilities. In turn, in the second stage, with full operational capacity, this amount should exceed PLN 10 billion. The city budget will also receive significant amounts from personal income tax and employees' expenses. In port cities, this type of facilities often have a chance to become a kind of tourist attraction.

The investor himself declares activities for the benefit of the local community, for the purposes agreed with it, for an amount of at least EUR 5 million, i.e. over PLN 20 million. ZMPSiŚ SA also plans compensatory activities for the benefit of residents and the natural environment, such as the construction of a new entrance to the beach, the construction of a walking and cycling path and the restoration of the white and gray dune habitat and the Wavan forest.

When operations begin, the terminal and the hinterland are to be connected by a network of rail and road roads, and in the future also by inland navigation.

During the session, representatives of ZMPSiŚ SA and the investor answered numerous questions from councilors and residents of the Warszów estate.

As it was unanimously emphasized, the meeting will begin a new quality in relations with the local community. It is based on understanding the arguments of each side, trust, openness and constant dialogue. It was announced that this meeting format would be continued.
