Investment flash – the port of Szczecin, the Kashubian Basin

The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority SA is a leader in the region in terms of implemented investments. Currently, in the port of Szczecin, in the bulk transshipment area, one of two flagship investment projects is underway: "Improving access to the port of Szczecin in the Kashubian Basin area." The aim of the modernization projects is the constant development of ports and increasing the amount of handled cargo, and above all, improving the competitiveness of the Szczecin and Świnoujście port complex in the Baltic Sea basin.

Status of work progress

Currently, the progress of basic works on the quays is approximately 80 percent. In turn, the dredging works were completed in 65 percent.

Work related to securing the corners of the islands of Ostrów Mieleński and Mieleńska Łąka has been completed. The following quays are ready: Dąbrowieckie, Chorzowskie, Gliwickie-Uskok and Chorzowskie-Uskok. The Notecki Basin was flooded and closed.

It is worth mentioning that the Dąbrowieckie Quay together with the dolphin marina are equipped with the latest technologies for transhipment of liquid chemicals, including a comprehensive system of technical infrastructure protecting the environment. The quay is mainly dedicated to regular transhipment of sulfuric acid, but in the future it may also be adapted to transhipment of other products.

The final stage of work

July 16 this year The last stage of dredging works has begun, as a result of which the port area will reach a technical depth of 12.5 m. The works will last until the end of October this year.

Modernization works at the Katowice quay are also in the final stage. Here, due to transhipment and port superstructure, the works were divided into four main sections. The most advanced works are on section 1-13, where the pile-driving and reinforced concrete works have been completed. Currently, preparations are underway for the construction of a rail and road surface along with the accompanying infrastructure on the quay. Demolition and pile-driving works are underway on the remaining sections.

Project scope

The contractor of the construction works is Korporacja Budowlana DORACO. The investment costs nearly PLN 245 million net. It received EU funding from the Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program 2014-2020.

As part of the project, the contractor will rebuild approximately 1,000 meters of quays (Chorzowskie, Chorzowskie Uskok, Gliwickie Uskok, Katowickie) and build over 400 meters of completely new quays: Dąbrowieckie with a dolphin marina and Zamykacje. The permissible operational load on quays will increase to 40 kN/sq m. The Kashubian Basin, together with turntables for ships, will be deepened to a technical depth of 12.5 m.

The investment will be complemented by works related to the reconstruction of railway and road systems and the modernization of water supply, sewage, electricity and telecommunications networks. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-2025. (ed. 19/07/2024, ZMPSiŚ SA)
