Six companies want to build new transhipment quays in the port of Szczecin
Six bids were received by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority in response to a tender for construction works as part of the investment "Improving access to the port in Szczecin in the area of the Dębicki Canal". The cheapest one is worth almost PLN 344 million, while the most expensive one exceeds PLN 596 million.
As part of the investment, the infrastructure of the Szczecin port will be adapted to the current trends on the maritime transport market, which is associated with the deepening and modernization of the Świnoujście-Szczecin fairway to 12.5 meters. And although the deepening itself is performed by the Maritime Office in Szczecin, the role of the port management is to adapt the port quays in Szczecin to the new parameters of the fairway.
Hence, in the area of the Dębicki Canal, it is necessary to modernize the Czeskie, Słowacki and Fińskie quays to a depth of 12.5 m, build a new Norwegian quay and, in the future, possibly the Danish quay, which will close this part of the canal. This is where the handling of general cargo, including containers, will be concentrated.
In addition to the Dębicki Canal, construction works will also be carried out in the Kashubian Basin as part of the project "Improving access to the port in Szczecin in the area of the Kashubian Basin". There will be, among others, the new Dąbrowieckie quay, and the Katowice and Chorzowskie quays, for example, will be modernized. In this case, ZMPSiŚ is waiting for offers for construction works until June 15 this year.
Both investments are to be completed by the end of 2023. They have EU funding. Agreements in this area were signed on December 20 last year. The total amount of support from OPI & E is PLN 436 million.
Certainly, the implementation of the investment on the fairway connecting Świnoujście with Szczecin will lead to a change in the quality of ship and cargo handling in the port of Szczecin. It may also change the cargo structure in the entire Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex, making port companies reload more general cargo than bulk cargo.
The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority is the undisputed investment leader in the region. From the moment we are in the EU, thanks to EU support until the end of 2021, the amount of investments made by the Company in the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex will exceed two billion zlotys.
